centimes additionnels communaux -- Communal additional centimes. A surtax added to the cantonal taxes on personal income and property, on corporate profits and capital, and on dogs and domestic help. The largest single source of income for the commune of Veyrier.

Chancellerie -- Secretariat.

Conseil administratif -- Administrative council. The three-man collegiate executive body in communes with more than 3,000 population.

Conseil des Etats -- Council of States. The upper house of the Swiss national legislature.

Conseil d'Etat -- Council of State. The seven-member, collegiate executive body of the canton of Geneva.

Conseil federal -- Federal council. The Swiss national seven-man collegiate executive body.

Conseil municipal -- Municipal council. The communal legislative body.

Conseil national -- National council. The lower house of the Swiss national legislature.

franc -- The basic monetary unit used in Switzerland. One Swiss franc is the equivalent of twenty-three cents American.

gendarme -- A police officer.

Grand Conseil -- The 100-member unicameral legislative body of the canton of Geneva.

H. L. M. -- Popular abbreviation for communal or cantonal financed and owned low rental housing. The full tide in French is Habitations a Loyers Moderes.

Hospice General -- General Hospital. The quasi governmental, quasi private institution in charge of providing for all free hospital and allied institutional care throughout the canton of Geneva.

Le Maire -- The Mayor.

La Mairie -- The Town Hall.
